As I am sure you all have figured out by now, Eric is smart! He has a lot of physical disabilities, but receptively, he has no problems understanding. Lately, I have been trying to decide to start potty training him. He will be 5 this July and he definitely knows the potty sensation. I have a lot of mixed thoughts when it comes to potty training. First, developmentally, Eric is at about a 2 year level. Would you start training a boy when he is 2? No, right? Second, Eric has a hard time climbing up to the potty. We have a stool but it is still hard for him to climb up and turn around safely. I know that I do need to be there with him, at all times, but I also want him to be able to become independent. My third thought being, there are so many other developmental things that he needs to catch up on before he can even begin potty training, in my opinion. Eric shows only a little bit of interest.
With all of that being said, the last couple weeks, Eric has been taking his pants off, because he can. He is learning self dressing. As well as, I find him in his room with his diaper off and he is discovering his "area". This is my battle. I know in many ways, he is a "typical" almost 5 year old. Even 4 year old's discover their body. The other day Eric came home from school in his ski bibs because he was "down there" in school and pointed "it" up and peed all over his clothes. =) I don't know what to do. Kind of torn. I may start having to use duct tape to keep his diapers on! =)
Would love some suggestions! Does anyone else have any good "diaper off" stories??
Til next time,
Shauna
oh yikes! well if he is showing interest, then I would go for it. What about using a small potty so he doesnt have to climb up onto the toilet? You are doing diapers now, so the clean up shouldn't be a huge difference anyway. what a little stinker ..... hang in there!
ReplyDeleteMindy, We have tried the little potties...the problem is...he is the size of a 4yr old and they are made for 2 year olds. I have researched many. We have experimented a little with him, to keep him interested. He wears pull ups as well as diapers. When he wants me to put him on the potty, I do. Will keep you posted.
