Eric's Med's..

Everyday, twice a day Eric has to take 2 different medications for his seizures.  Keppra and Ethosuximide.  They are both liquid form and very strong tasting.  Eric absolutely hates taking them and twice a day it is a battle to get him to take them.  I always have to have another person to help because he fights it, he kicks, and spits it out.  I administer the meds with a syringe in the side of the lip  (just like a cat) otherwise he spits it out.   Eric has a really high gag reflex so often times if he gets too much medicine at one time, he will gag and then maybe even throw up the medicine.  It is horrible!  No fun!

So, lately medicine time has only gotten worse!  So we talked to Eric's Neurologist and he said we could try smashing a pill form of one of the meds.  So we decided maybe we should try it.  He still has to take one liquid medicine, which is the better tasting one anyway.  So last night, we tried the pill for the first time.  I smashed it up and mixed it with about 5 bites of applesauce!  It worked!  YAY!!  So much easier.  I was honest with Eric and I told him that this was how he could take one medicine now.  I made it out to be the coolest thing EVER!!!  He took it, no problem, both last night and today!  Let's hope this works for a while. This is a huge step for us!  Less stress!  Keeping my fingers crossed!

How do your kids like taking meds?  Please share!

Til next time,
Shauna
